Melide – Santiago de Compostela 53km

I run with my backpack towards Santiago. On the way I have time to ponder the meaning of my pilgrimage... “Well, this probably didn’t clean my soul nor revealed the secrets of the universe.” However, I experienced an unforgettable running adventure and met a lot of interesting people. And of course it was a great feeling to arrive to the square of Santiago’s Cathedral, which is the “official finish line” of my journey. But again I have to say that the journey itself was more important than the goal. Some old sacred writing (if I recall correctly) has said that “only through pain you find the path of illumination. Therefore you must go through the path of Santiago.” I, on the other hand, am spending my evening surrounded by nice people as well as in front of me there is a huge portion of food and a bottle of good red wine. And I wonder: what affliction? I guess the times have changed… Adios amigos!

Melide – Santiago de Compostela 53km

Juosta raahustan reppuni kanssa kohti Santiagoa. Matkalla kerkeän pohdiskelemaan "syvällisesti" pyhiinvaellukseni tarkoitusta... "no tokkopa tässä sielu puhdistui, saatikka maailmankaikkeudun salat paljastui". Mutta koinpa ikimuistoisen juoksuseikkailun ja tapasin paljon mielenkiintoisia ihmisiä. Ja toki oli hieno tunne saapua Santiagon katedraalin aukiolle, vaelluksen ”viralliselle maaliviivalle”. Mutta taasen joudun toteamaan, että matka oli päämäärää tärkeämpi. Joku vanha pyhä kirjoitus (muistaakseni) muuten kertoi, että "vain tuskan kautta voit löytyy valkeuden tien. Siksi sinun on käytävä Santiagon tie". Minä taasen istun illallista mukavien ihmisten ympäröimänä, edessäni valtava ruoka-annos ja pullo hyvää punaviiniä. Ja ihmettelen..."että mikä ihmeen kärsimys?" Lienee ajat muuttuneet... Adios amigos!

Barbadelo – Melide 56 km

Galicia is the last province of the hiking trail. The Spanish call it the Green County, because of its abundant vegetation. This is thanks to the generous amounts of rain in the area. “It is always raining in Galicia”, the Spanish say. Despite that the hilly greenness is very appealing.

After morning’s mist the sun shines again, so quite an exaggeration that legend, too. I keep going…Suddenly a snake of XL size comes hissing from the bush. After some evasive side steps the situation is under control again. From now on, I must watch carefully tree roots and twiggies. Later on I have dinner together with my travel buddies at one local joint in small town called Melide. Naturally, I tell others about my brave fight against snakes and dinosaurs – feeling like Indiana Jones. I book a room from a hotel in the middle of the town. Just to be sure I ask the receptionist: “surely it is forbidden for snakes to enter”. Before going to bed I look under it again – the fifth time I guess, and then Mr. Jones goes to peaceful sleep.

Barbadelo – Melide 56km

Galicia on vaellusreitin viimeinen maakunta. Espanjalaiset kutsuvat sitä Vihreäksi Maakunnaksi, johtuen sen runsaasta kasvillisuudesta. Joka taasen johtuu varsin runsaista sademääristä. ”Galiciassa sataa aina”, kuuluu espanjalainen toteamus. Siitä huolimatta alueen kumpuileva vehreys viehättää suuresti.

Ja aamun sumun jälkeen aurinkokin paistaa, joten aikamoista liioittelua tuokin legenda. Matka jatkuu... Yllättäen ronskin kokoinen käärme sihahtaa pusikosta. ”Rytmikäs” väistöliike ja tilanne hallinnassa. Jatkossa metsäpolun puunjuuret ja oksat joutuvat erikoistarkkailun alaiseksi. Illallistan yhdessä vaeltajakavereiden kanssa Meliden pikkukaupungin kuppilassa. Toki kerron pöytäseurueelle tarinani päivän hurjasta taistelustani ”käärmeitä ja muita hirmuliskoja” vastaan. ”Urheana sankarina” koen itseni vähintään Indiana Jonesiksi. Buukkaan hotellihuoneen kylän keskustasta. Varmuuden vuoksi kysyn respasta, että ”kai tänne on käärmeiltä pääsy kieletty”. Ennen nukkumaanmenoa kurkistan vielä viidennen kerran sängyn alle ja Mr. Jones vaipuu ”rauhallisena” uneen... :)

Villafranca del Bierzo – Barbadelo 81km

Today we crossed the last mountain range of the route. During the day we followed many serpentine roads. Suunto t6 on my wrist tells me: ascent 1497m, descent 1413m, high point 1350m, low point 431m. Along the way I meet lots of interesting persons.

Pilgrims of today probably differ quite a lot from their early ‘role models’. Only very few people spend more than a month on their hike: a weeklong hike of a couple of hundred kilometers seems adequate as a soul cleansing ritual. It also seems very popular that you walk the classic French road in three parts in three successive/consecutive years. In the last couple of years, mountain bikers have also joined the hikers, who think that the 800km long trail from the French border to Santiago de Compostela is a suitable project for a week. The bishop’s office of Santiago keeps record of the pilgrims. Surprisingly the biggest age group is 21-30, and the sex ratio is 50-50, so it’s not just a hobby for ‘old-timers’.

In 2004, there were about 180 000 registered hikers arriving to Santiago, so maybe we could start calling this some kind of ‘mass tourism’?

Villafranca del Bierzo – Barbadelo 81km

Tänään ylitimme reitin viimeisen vuorijonon. Päivä oli serpentiiniteiden täyttämä. Suunto t6 ranteessani kertoo: ascent 1497m, descent 1413m, high point 1350m, low point 431m. Matkan varrella tapaan paljon mielenkiintoisia persoonia.

Nykyajan pyhiinvaeltajat eroavat todennäköisesti varsin paljon alkuaikojen ”esikuvistaan”. Vain harva viettää yli kuukautta vaelluksellaan; modernin pyhiinvaeltajan ”sielunpuhdistukseen” näyttää riittävän viikonkestävä, muutaman sadan kilometrin vaellus. Hyvin suosittua näyttää olevan myös se, että kulkee klassisen Ranskan tien kolmessa osassa peräkkäisinä vuosina. Viime vuosina mukaan ovat tulleet myös maastopyöräilijät, joille n. 800km:n taival Ranskan rajalta Santiago de Compostelaan onkin sopiva viikkoprojekti. Santiagon piispantoimisto pitää kirjaa pyhiinvaeltajista. Yllättäen suurin ikäryhmä on 21-30 vuotta, sukupuolijakauma nykyään jo lähes 50/50, joten kyseessä ei olekaan vain ”harmaapartojen” harrastus.

Vuoden 2004 aikana Santiagoon saapui n. 180 000 rekisteröityä vaeltajaa, voitaneenko siis puhua jo jonkinmoisesta ”massaturismista”.
